Irish Labradors.

Jacobs Fund is a fund set up in memory of the first Irish Labrador we rehomed who, had suffered hurrendous cruelty in Ireland and was brought here to safety and a lovely new home. Sadly, last Christmas he ate some tea light candles which swelled up inside him and he died.

The Irish dog situation is terrible. The volunteers working as rescuers in Ireland are nothing short of saints. They see terrible neglect and cuelty.

In Ireland there is scant regard for the care of pets who are allowed to roam uncared for and not spayed or neutered. As a result there are many unwanted dogs and females with pups that are in urgent need of re-homing.In Ireland there is a non re-homing policy in the pounds that means a surrendered animal is often put to sleep the same day they are surrendered, or at the end of a 7 day period if these animals are not taken by a rescue organisation.

A quote extracted from a conversation with an Irish recue worker recently states... "We managed to get a few of the pound dogs out before xmas – a few labs and terriers – but the horrible thing is a few of the pounds put every dog to sleep at xmas because there was no staff to see to them over the holidays"

Rescuers in Ireland ring us to see if we can take the dogs they rescue but sadly, the transporation fees are now £70 per dog and this is proving extremely restrictive in the number we can save. The dogs that are brought over from Ireland make wonderful pets and, despite the cruelty some have faced still love people .

Some supporters of the rescue do not approve of paying to bring dogs over from Ireland. In respect of their views we have set up a seperate fund called Jacobs Fund which is used specifically for the purpose of rescuing Irish dogs. If you would like to help Irish dogs by making a donation to Jacobs Fund, please download and complete the Jacobs Fund standing order mandate. The account is still in the name of Labrador Rescue, however the money is kept seperate for this specific purpose.
