Good vibes for Max please

Post by JM »

Sorry - haven’t posted on here for a while, just lurked in the background!

Max started limping back in September. We thought it was arthritis starting (he had arthroscopy ops back in 2016/2017 on both his elbows so we were expecting this sometime). However, mid October, I noticed a slight bump on his right front leg, so had an X-ray and biopsy which showed that the bump was cancer... Since then he’s had an op to remove most of the lump (at least all the vets could remove as the tumour has wrapped itself around muscles, tendons and nerves), more tests and CT scan. The cancer hasn’t spread, but has markers to suggest that it may.

So we had options of amputation, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. We discounted amputation as the CT scan showed arthritis in his elbows, shoulders and hips, and as he’s a sturdy lad who is 9 in a few weeks time, we thought that he wouldn’t cope with this very well for long.

So Max is starting radiotherapy tomorrow at the Liverpool Vet School. He’s got to go for one treatment a week for 4 weeks. Fingers crossed that it’s effective.

All crossed for Max, bless him. It’s a worry when they get sick. Everything crossed that the treatment is successful, especially as the cancer hasn’t spread....ok, it ‘may’ spread but at this stage it hasn’t, which is good.

Give him a big hug...and one for you too :bighug: :bighug:

Next treatment on Wednesday pm, followed by chemo if the radiotherapy looks like it’s had some effect. Unfortunately they describe the treatment as palliative, so we’re buying time.

If we went for amputation, it would remove the cancer site, and he’d need chemo as well, but we’ve thought about that and really think he wouldn’t cope for long because of the arthritis in his other joints, particularly his other elbow (he’s had ops a few years ago in both elbows for elbow displacia). 😒 Hard decisions 😔.

At the moment though he’s fine - he wasn’t limping for a few weeks after his operation before Christmas, but suddenly started again last Monday (before the first RT session). But for now, he’s still up for his walks, games and definitely for his food!! He is being such a good lad.
