Are you paying the correct Council Tax?

Post by Blackdog »

I bumped in to an old neighbour who was telling me that they had received a windfall (thousands) from the local Council. She found out that their house was in a higher Council Tax band than the property opposite which was larger but had been extended. She asked others in the road whose properties were a similar size and they were paying less so she contacted the council. They tried to fob her off but she wrote a letter asking for a response. They didn't make it easy and I think she said she had to pay for a re-rating by the Land Registry. Anyway the upshot was the rating found in her favour and the council had to pay back thousands in overpayments. And no they didn't increase the neighbours tax bands.

I decided to check our house but unfortunately we are paying the same as our neighbour. Its definitely worth checking out in case you are entitled to a windfall. Link below to checkmypostcode and after entering your postcode click on the link to council tax bands and see what others in your street are paying - are you paying too much?!. If you are and get a rebate Cheques in the post to Blackdog ............... Seriously if you do get some money back remember Lab Rescue.

We were paying too much. I queried this a few years ago, and hey presto, got a new bathroom out of my little windfall.

Sound advice................worth checking.

We had our house checked a couple of years ago unfortunately we are paying the correct money, however at the time the guy who came out told us if we ever decide to sell the new owners would pay more due to us adding a garage and conservatory???? Not sure if this would still be the case as it was a few years ago but the guy did make notes.......

The road our friend lives in has many different styles of houses so I can see why at a glance they rated hers more. It is definitely worth checking out particularly if you can see from the banding that others pay the same or less and their house is substantially larger.

Good find. I would also suggest having a look at https://quicksold.co.uk/area-information as you can check lots of useful information for your local postcode. From housing information to residential data, crime statistics to sold house prices you can find everything along with wealth and other ranks.
