Bring back any memories?
Someone asked the other day, "What was your favourite fast food?"
"We didn't have fast food when I was growing up, all the food was slow."
"C'mon, seriously, where did you eat?"
"It was a place called home" I replied. I explained:
"Mum cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, if I didn't like what was put on my plate, I was allowed to sit there until I did like it."
By this time, the lad was laughing so hard, I was afraid he would cause himseld damage so, I didn't tell him the rest.
Here are some other things I would have tolkd him if I thought he could've handled it.
Some parents NEVER owned their own house, wore jeans, never left this country or had a credit card.
My parents never drove me to school, I had a bike that weighed about 50lb and only had one speed....slow.
We didn't have a television in our house until I was 10. It was, of course, black and white, and the station went off the air at 10pm, after playing the National Anthem and epilogue; It came back on the air at about 6am and there was usually a locally produced news and farm show on, featuring local people.
I never had a telephone in my room. The only phone was on a party line. Before you could use it, you had to listen and make sure some people you didn't know weren't already using the line.
If you grew up in a generation before there was fast food, you may want to share some memories with your choldren or grandchildren. Just don't blame me if they bust a gut laughing. Growing up isn't what it used to be, is it?
How many do you remember?
Headllight switches on the floor of the car
Ignition switches on the dashboard
Trouser leg clips for bicycles without chain guards
Using hand signals for cards without turn indicatord
Older than dirt quiz:
Count all the one that you remember, not the ones you were told about......Rating at the bottom
1. Sweet cigarettes
2 Coffee shops with juke boxes
3 Home milk delivery in glass bottles
4 Party lines on the telephone
5 Newsreels before the movie
6 TV test patterns that came on at night after the last show and were there until the programmes started again in the morning...(There were only 2 channels (if you were fortunate)
7 Peashooters
8 33 rpm records
9 45 rpm records
10 Hi-Fi's
11 Metal ice trays with levers
12 Blue flashbulb
13 Cork popguns
14 Wash tub wringers
If you remembered 0-3...Your'e still young
If you rembered 3-6.....Your are getting older
If you remembered 7-10....Don't tell your age
If you remembered 11-14......Your're positively ancient.
I must be 'positively ancient' but, those memories are some of the best parts of my life.

Re: Bring back any memories?
Gosh, I remember some of those!! In fact, I was out with my sister this morning, and we were talking about food and remembering that the only fast food was the Wimpy!! And going there was a treat that happened once a year if we were lucky.
In addition to what you've mentioned about telly, I also remember 'And here is the test card and some music'
I also remember the picture on our telly used to keep slipping, and we had to keep getting up and either adjusting it with a knob at the back, or giving it a bang on the top with your fist!!
Phones : I remember the old red phone boxes with the button A and button B thing -and I remember my dad telling the operator he'd like to make a trunk call
You could also get orange juice in bottles - it was gorgeous
Love threads like this! I reckon I'll think of a few more things before the day's over

Re: Bring back any memories?
Love this thread, brought back lots of happy memories. Yes I remember most of them (unfortunately).
Jan I had a threepenny bit each day to spend on the way to school but it never went up to a sixpence, you were obviously more up market than me
Just been talking to Paul about this topic, can anyone confirm or otherwise whether the original Walnut Whips had half a walnut on the inside on the base as well as one on the top. This has been bugging Paul since I bought him a Walnut Whip a few weeks ago and it didn't - I can't help him as I never did like them.

Re: Bring back any memories?
Joan, from memory, you are correct. They had half a walnut on the top and half a walnut in the base of the inside. I stopped buying them when I split the roof of my mouth open when biting the walnut off the top.JoanG wrote:Love this thread, brought back lots of happy memories. Fab lollies are still in the freezer cabinets at the supermarket, and still sell well.
