Ideas to tempt appetite

Hi

Max finished his radiotherapy treatment and started his chemo weeks ago. His first chemo went OK, with a slight dicky tummy, and a sore leg from the RT, but then was great.

He had his second session last Wednesday. He was a bit dopey from the sedation for a day, but he’s totally lost his appetite - very little tempts him. He’ll eat something one time, but the next he doesn’t want it. He’s on anti-sickness and anti-nausea tablets from the vet. We saw the vet school vet yesterday on our way on holiday - he gave him a good exam and all was OK. He said he’d be better in a couple of days or so, but in the meantime ...

So - he has a load of meds to take and he’s turning his nose up at everything - even cheese, chicken and scrambled egg cooked specially for him... We’re on holiday now in the Lakes - going to the supermarket to stock up for the week...

Any ideas of things to get to tempt him?

Thanks

Jill

Awww, poor Max. I don't know about the effects of chemo on dogs but Mum had chemo and said that it gave her an odd metallic taste in her mouth that made everything taste strange and so affected her appetite. Things she had always enjoyed tasted or smelled temporarily perculiar and nothing seemed to help except time. Her mouth also became sore a few days after each course.
I guess you can only persevere with the things that have tempted previously or maybe just try something very bland like porridge or chicken soup.
Sending positive thoughts and hope Max soon feels brighter :love2:

Bless you. FISH always works for Lily. Tinned Tuna and Freshly cooked salmon are her favourites, but usually a bit of baked/boiled cod will also do the trick.

Hope you manage to find something that will encourage your beloved boy to eat and grow strong again.

Have you ever tried Fortiflora for dogs - cat here loves it - like drugs on the dinner - smells meaty and is very good for the digestion - Hope all keeps on going well - bless him

Thanks For your suggestions everyone.

We took Max to the vets on Monday evening - and he had blood tests. The results yesterday showed his white blood cell count was low, so he ended up in hospital last night on antibiotics and fluids. We picked him up this morning and he’s much better - ready for food and taking his meds!! We’ve got to keep it small meals of bland stuff for a couple of days - and he has to go back tomorrow for a re-run of his post chemo blood tests.
