Spike - adopted April 2012

Post by whalleydeb »

It's been a long time coming but finally got round to updating you about Spike, the 18 month old boy that we collected at Easter last year.
As first time dog owners, it is fair to say that the past year has been a massive learning curve but we really wouldn't be without 'Mr Spike' to give him his Sunday name!
He settled in so quickly with us; amazing really, even on the first night. We realised that he doesn't like being shut in the kitchen, but has found his sleep spot on the half landing. Never really took to a bed at all; maybe he didn't have one before perhaps?
We took him to the vets for a check over, and were advised to get him to put on a bit of weight, although he has so much energy he burns off whatever he eats! Now looks fit and healthy though rather than thin. Initially we found him quite strong on the lead and he sounded quite aggressive when meeting other dogs; we now realise that he was just nervous and jumpy. He has calmed down so much and he now loves playing with his doggy friends that he meets on his walks. He had his 'man-op' a few weeks after we adopted him and this has also helped to settle him a bit, I think. He is incredibly quick when chasing balls; can outrun most of his friends!
Spike is a real delight; so loving and never minds being rolled on, cuddled and fussed - the more the better as far as Spike is concerned!
He has had a lot of new experiences, I think, since we adopted him; he used to be frightened of water, but now loves jumping into the river and swimming after sticks. He didn't really play fetch and so on when we first got him (again, not sure whether he had really done this sort of thing), but now can play catch with the ball for hours, as well as 'football' with the boys.
Anyway, will update this again, and include some photos. Thank you so much for letting us adopt Spike; he is really a member of our family and we all love him dearly.

What a refreshing update,We too have bee approved for Adoption, and really cant wait to Get going. Its a little frustrating for the Family at the Moment as we have got so much on,which was planned prior to The Family Being approved.
We are probably,a week or ten days away from making an Appointment to see Glenys and the Gang,
The frustrating thing is for us is that we all keep looking On this Fantastic Website,Falling In love in With a Lab,and then seeing that the Dog has been been taken!! That doesnt stop us from Looking though!!!
The day cant come quick enough now we are really looking forward to it,more than you can imagine,Updates like this make it all the more exciting.
Just counting down the days now!!! Bring it on!!!
Cheers
Stu

A lovely update; Spike sounds wonderful (love the name!)
It must be difficult for the rescue to assess first-time dog owners as so many people just don't realise what caring for a labrador really entails.. But everyone that loves dogs has to start somewhere and I'm so pleased that you were approved as your tale of your first year with Spike is truly heart-warming. I agree that a dog should find his/her place to sleep (as opposed to being crated or shut in a room). Our rescue boy, Toby chose to sleep on a sofa in one of our son's bedrooms when he arrived a couple of years ago.. and he's slept there every night since.. George can sleep through the snoring!!
Can't wait to hear more about your adventures and see pictures of your beautiful boy :love5:

Sorry - just starting out here on the whole blogging business :1001:

Could anyone give some advice on how I upload photos of Spike? Tried copy and paste but that doesn't seem to work - would welcome any tips!

Don't worry, I didn't know how to upload pics when I first started either.
I think there is a thread somewhere which explains it but here is a quick guide:
- Search Google for 'Photobucket'
- Either sign up or sign in
- Upload a photo to Photobucket
- Click on the photo once it has been uploaded
- Then look for the IMG code (it should be the right hand side of the page, possibly under the title 'Links to share this photo')
- Copy it and then paste it on a message here
There may be an easier way but this one works for me!
Hope you find this useful and just ask if you have any more questions!

Well here goes; about to post my first picture!

Image

This first pic is Spike with me in the woods near our house; I'm posing but Spike is more interested in something else!

The next pic is Spike with my daughter at the top of Ill Bell this Easter - a fantastic walk; beautiful sky, loads of snow and Spike absolutely loved eating the snow and racing around in it.

Hope this all works and enjoy the photos!

Now you got the hang of it there will be no stopping you. :1967:

Mine are always like that in the woods. There is always just something they need to run off and check.
