Dukes Story

Dukes Story (Poem based on the true life of Duke.)

In my life I’ve had many homes
I never really knew quite why
I learned the rules I did my best
It did not count how hard I try

A baby came along one day
I thought this could be really good
There’s no place for the dog here now
I never really understood

A miracle my luck had changed
I found the perfect master too
He gave me love he cared for me
He said I am lonely just like you

Then one day my Master slept
I could not wake him up
I would have liked another try
But they said it was no good

He has passed away they said
What to do about poor Duke
He is much to old I heard them say
For another home to look

Labrador rescue then they say
I’ll try to get in touch today
They may help you never know
To find poor Duke a place to go.

So Duke went to his final home
A home so filled with love
His next move after this would be his last
To find his old Master up above.

If it takes a week a month or more
We will always help a Labrador
To give him love and treat him fair
And find a home that’s waiting there.

Makes me sad that new baby is the reason people give up their labs. The first thing we did when we brought our first baby home was have a family photo, I will scan it in later if I can find it. Of course it was Pops, baby and I. She protected us all from day 1 and we had some fab times.

I haven't got time for those giving up (read disposing of) their dog because of a baby.. but to face the trauma of losing your home AND being forced to part with a beloved dog is absolutely heartbreaking..

Here's the pic.

Sam was born during our last hot summer and we used to go to the stables every day have a nice walk and spend time in the fresh air. I was criticised for him being 'outdoors' so much but I used to sit outside and feed him and we had everything we needed. Happy times!
