Well I finally bit the bullet this morning with Millie while we were out walking and let her off her lead. She has been desperate to go for days but I have been reluctant to as I wasn't sure what would happen as we have only had her one week.

Fortunately there was no-one or any other dogs about so she got her way - and off she shot round and round the field like a mad rabbit! I kept walking and she trotted off in front of me sometimes behind me. I had a pocket full of gravy bones as treats to practise her recall and for a first time she did very well. She ventured towards some mucky ditches so I know now that she is going to be a water babe!

I had a couple of heart stopping moments as selective deafness and defiance came into play, and I spotted a rabbit before she did so I grabbed her and wouldn't let her go till the rabbit was out of site. We threw sticks and she chased them so I will take a ball with me tomorrow. I am also having to learn to shout very loudly to assert my authority with her, maybe a whistle would be easier?

I feel sure if she saw another dog/dogs I wouldn't stand much of a chance in getting her to stay with me at the moment off the lead I think she would be off toward them. It's something to work towards though.

Will try to post some pictures later off my phone (provided the laptop doesn't fry it. My old phone is totally wrecked after uploading them last weekend to the laptop have no idea why?!!)

Feel as though we have made progress today she's a little darling, and saving me a fortune at the beauty salon with the daily Labrador facials

I love these updates!!!! I am so pleased for you Ann - Millie sounds great fun.


When we first adopted Maisie she too was like a whirlwind and I was afraid to let her off the lead so I used to take a squeeky toy and treats out with me and that seemed to do the trick. Eventually she stopped charging off after every living thing and stayed close. She can now even walk through sheep and totally ignores them.

Hi Ann

Millie is lovely - aren't we lucky to have such lovely girls. I brought Fudge home with me on Sunday and I can't tell you how much pleasure she has brought me already. I am amazed at how good she has been but like you am a little apprehensive to let her off the lead yet (she is such a friendly girl and wants to "say hello" to everyone). Anyway, she is at the vet's at the moment having her op (she is being spayed) so I hope she will be ok later on when I pick up and still be speaking to me.... Will take it easy with her for a while and then find the right place/time to let her off lead with no distractions so we can practise.

Enjoy every minute with Millie - she looks like a gorgeous, happy girl.

Oh Millie you are a rascal - but what fun you are having in your new home - your a very lucky girl.

Oscar and Oakley like to keep me on my toes too. As Oakley is still learning and exploring (7 1/2 months) the latest victim was a beautiful fig tree in the dinning room yesterday - 'the boys' are partners in crime. I had went out to tend to one of my rabbits who is recovering from an op and although the boys can watch me through patio doors - this was their revenge for not coming out with me.

They are constantly at my side twice a day when feeding the rabbits - Never seen two boys who love lettuce, cabbage, carrot, brocolli, cauliflower, melon, apple, pear - goodness the list is endless.

Anyhow. you take care and enjoy your lovely new home.

As Oakley is still learning and exploring (7 1/2 months) the latest victim was a beautiful fig tree in the dinning room yesterday - 'the boys' are partners in crime.

O'h dear! Mmm can relate to that, my back was turned for less than 2 minutes this morning (I know as my porridge was in the microwave) and she chewed the corner of one of my cushions out of the lounge!!! I was not v happy either. Have hidden it from OH till the house is empty and I can try to fix it. She's got teeth like b****y razor blades!

On our walk this morning she was attacked by a male dog which has frightened us both to death and really knocked my confidence. I couldn't get him off her as he had no collar on and his owner had a bad back so couldn't grab him either! He was shoving her into a ditch and wouldn't leave her alone. She wasn't hurt thank God, he looked like a Rotty Boxer cross i'm not sure what he was except he was a big dog. Just wish I had remembered what 'cheekygit' posted on here a couple of weeks ago about unruly dogs, to give them a swift kick up the backside as I would have done it. Don't know if it would have had the desired effect though.

Daren't let her off again for the time being as she wouldn't come back to me afterwards, she was whizzing round the field snifing everything, now whether she was smelling his scent marks I don't know.

She's asleep now hope she's going to be ok, I gave her lots of hugs when we got home.
