Hello. we adopted Alfie(Now Olly) on 9th July. I would hope to just pass a message on to his previous owners that he has settled down very well and is enjoying our garden and lots of walks. He is a very active boy but quick to learn and can now fetch his dish for his dinner and shake a paw good eh... we are having trouble with him mouthing/playbiting and as he is quite large we are a touch worried about it the word no seems to mean nothing!! has any one had/solved this problem. and .. to anyone thinking of adopting after the loss of a much loved labby. I would just like to say it is hard, (tears still come) but I am sure Olly will weedle his way into my heart very shortly, he is trying very hard! theres no replacing a dog but new beginings.xx

This is exactly right. Time will heal your loss, but you never forget.

It sounds as if Olly is settling in with very well will you. I wish I could get Balee to bring me his dish.

I am sure someone will get back toyou about the mouthing and play biting soon.

I'm glad ollie is helping to ease the pain of your loss, as regards the mouthing one of the ways to combat this is to just turn your back on him when he does it, he will soon get the message that you do not want to play the game. good luck.

Hello and welcome to the site.

I'm sure Olly will soon settle and weedle his way into your heart. It may take time as all dogs are so different, but your lab will always be with you. There is room for two in your heart.

Hi, wonderful to hear that Alfie/Olly is doing well. Its great to have an update, such a lovely dog.

I think the mouthing problem is fairly common in young males, although I'm not an expert. I hope you have received some good advice.

Looking forward to hear how he's getting on in the future.

Our very first vet had a brilliant chat with my 8 year old son about puppies using their needle like teeth on human skin when playing and how puppies learn from each other about how much pressue is ok to use when playing so they don't hurt each other. He told Richard to yelp, whine, tilt his head down and turn away from the puppy (our Merry dog) so that she would learn that she had used too much force on him. It worked a treat! Perhaps the same thing would work for Olly but might take a little longer?
We lost Merry 2 1/2 years ago when she was 13 1/2, she was my special dog and I still can't think about her without my eyes filling with tears so I feel for you having lost your own special friend. On a positive note, Jolly (our second lab) has done a brilliant job of taking over where Merry left off and we absolutely love her to bits!

Olly sounds adorable, I am sure Abi will give you some very sound advice - she is a star.
