i adopted bailey last november and after going to the vets for jabs i asked about food. i was given a feeding program which we sticked to. during this time me and my children were all asked about,[in the park]why is your lab so skinny, i also at the time thought he was looking more than taught so i up,d his food. he found a balance very soon and looked great. monthes later we had him neutered and now we do have to cut back on the food as he seems to put it on for fun. its a hard balance, trying to find out where you should be or not, without running back to the vet every 5 mins. trust your instinct, you know were they are ment to be. somtimes we have to be cruel to be kind, even with our labs! jill.

gosh i read that back after posting and it sounds hard, sorry all but iknow you know what i mean, just want the best for all our babys, we justlove them. x

It can be very difficult to keep a labs weight down Jill and you did't sound hard!
Since Bob was neutered I found that I had to be really strict with his food and treats as he piled 3kgs on within six months. Those "I haven't been fed for a thousand years" eyes are the problem. He is now back to 32kgs but I have to watch him like a hawk.

When dogs are nuetered their motabalism drops dramically, I have had problems with Paddy since he was nuetered, we have now found a food he is ok on, and also our vet told me to bulk him up with veggies, carrots etc and he loves it and it seems to be working for him....

i totally agree abi, always try to keep a good balance of weight. isnt it funny how the labs as a breed vary so much, but then again so do many humans, im lucky, i stay quite slim mainly because of my riding n dog walking but i love to walk my boo n we never seem to tire of it.i will continue to watch baileys wieght as i want him to be happy n healthy. we can all sometimes take a step back n think that babys getting a bit fat and as a owner its us who has to say [enough] we would with our children [well i would] . mums dog was always overwieght, which i was always nagging her about. mums dog [our bramble] died of old age at 14 but suffered from arthritis [for her last 4 yrs] [and at much cost]which i feel wouldnt been as bad if she was'nt carring so much weight[vet agreed]. mums got a jack russell now[puppy] and i am being very strict with her as this baby with his little legs can not cope with the extra weight but mum is still a bugger for saying "o its only a treat" or "he likes them" i will have to retrain mums brain. o yes those BIG EYES are a massive prob but we have to be strong, but i totally know what ur saying, as im wrighting this bailey is saying to me "u dont want that crust off that toast do you mum"lv jill n boo
