Alfie going for a walk off his Lead
Hi, Another update on Alfie. we have got alfie walking on his lead a treat he doesnt pull any more he just plods along by your side,he waits at the kerbside till you tell him to cross, brilliant. Alfie also sits in the yard comes when you call him excellent. So off I went early one morning on the beach About 5.30 am (I wanted to be early no other dog walkers). The tide was out so down to the waters edge we went, then I let Alfie off his lead. Great fun Alfie was tearing up and down the beach loving every minute of it He came back to me when I called him ( I thought to myself "Cracked it" ). however as soon as I got the lead out and he saw it he just managed to stay out of reach and wouldn't come near (not even for his favourite treats) so anyway at about 7.50 am another dog walker came along and the two dogs started playing together thats when I managed to catch him lol. I think a lot more recall training needed before he is let off his lead again. Good walk though. Thanks again for a lovely dog.We love him to bits. Dave and Family

All the Best Dave and family.

Re: Alfie going for a walk off his Lead
That was my Rosie's trick. We would go for lovely long walks across the hills with her off lead and if we saw another dog or person or in fact anything coming towards us, I would call her and she would come straight to me and sit while I put her lead on. As soon as we got to the car park though she knew that it was the end of the walk so she would stick by me but not close enough to have her lead put on. As Joan once commented when I told this tale a few months ago, I employed "extreme" dog training. I called Rosie over two or three times but she would dart away at the last minute so I got into the car and pretended to drive away. I only drove about six feet but it was enough for her to think that she was going to be left behind. When I got out of the car
she came straight to me for her lead to be put on. I only had to do this once and never had a problem again!

well done alfie !sounds like fun ,maybe show him lead during the walks and put him on it for a few minutes then let him off to play so he doesn't think the lead means hometime ?.
as they catch on quick !
i knew he had gone to a great home i wish we had a beach near here !

Hi Dave - the beach at that time sounds amazing - especially for Alfie
We've got a bit of a problem getting Tasha to come back to us when there's other dogs on the field where we go, so at times when she's just ignored me, I've been putting her on her lead and carried on walking for a few minutes and then let her off again. Not sure that this us working as she just wants to go and see every other dog we meet but we can but try! Starting training classes with her next week - think we need it more than her!

Hi Dave - you're brave - the beach at 5.30am!! Will have to arrange to meet you there with Blakey - he's pretty good at coming back, so hopefully Alfie will follow him. Must make a concerted effort very soon!
To all you other viewers of this message - we discovered what a small world this is when we realised that Blakey and Alfie live very close to each other - and use the same beach!!!!

...and another thought! If I see anyone with a lab now, I'll be asking if it has come from MKF!

Yes recall can be a tricky one with Labs! I love to see them running off the lead though, I get so much pleasure from seeing them running and playing and just being dogs really, best part about having dogs in my opinion.
His recall will improve with practice and maturity! By the time he is 10 you will have cracked it
Just kidding!

I always go out with Paddy early, we are home by 6-30am, I found if Paddy didn't come to me when called, I walked away from him briskly and ignored him, (you can do things like that when there's no-one else about.) Paddy would come after me to see where I was going, that's when he got praised and a small treat. I have trained all my dogs like that. When you chase after them they think they are in charge of the walk........ another thing I did was to crouch down so he couldn't see me and he was always looking back to make sure I was around, if he couldn't see me he came to find me.
It takes patience and kindness and be consistant.
