George 5 months on

Post by JoanG »

Well George has now been with us for over 5 months and he is a star!! He is now 15 months old and we could not have wished for a more loving dog. He loves everyone, he is good with toddlers, obviously with supervision as he is HUGE and still only a puppy, great with children of any age, people and other dogs. Everyone in the village knows him and he has a whole harem of bitches to play with who all think he’s the bees’ knees.:2388:

He is 40 kg and the vet says this is a good weight for him as he is so big. Wherever we go people come over to talk about him and tell us what a fabulous looking dog we have. The next questions are “What is he”, “Well he’s very big for a lab” – well looking on the web he looks like one of the Drakeshead dogs (working labs), long body, long neck, long legs.

In the home he is exceptional, well-mannered, quiet, obedient; absolutely full of fun and a real loonie if you get him excited. He can get so excited that he mouths your arms but a sharp NO quickly calms him down again. Walks well on the lead, sits at the kerb but has moments when he forgets himself and I now have muscles in my arms where I didn't know I had them. He’s been excellent at dog training except when they do “all the dogs in a circle and one dog and handler weaves between the others”. Each time a dog appears George thinks great he’s coming to play and jumps up, tail wagging, this is definitely a work in progress. Everything else he can do, even down stay for 3 mins when another lab got up and ran straight passed his nose! He has just passed his Bronze Good Citizen Award as well. :1944:

He is the clumsiest lab I have ever met. If he’s behind you coming down stairs or in the hallway he always manages to trip you up, his legs seem to go out sidewards - he he!! If you’ve got flip flops on he will somehow stand on the back of them and trip you up that way. :2008:

My utility room still looks like Alcatraz with wire mesh panels protecting my units and washing machine :1962: He does chew his bed and would chew anything left out in the utility room when he's left on his own.

This dog has brought such happiness to our family and our friends think he’s great. He likes to be with me in the day and happily follows me round wherever I am, he has helped with the gardening (a little too much sometimes, we have a large hole in the lawn and several plant pots have been whizzed round the garden and the plants rearranged), we’ve taught him to bring the papers in morning and night, he can sleep for England and loves to be cuddled.

I’ve trained him to recall to the whistle (thanks to Kathryn and John’s book) and am now doing Stop/Down to one blast of the whistle, and he’s learning very quickly.

Thank you Glenys for letting us have this lovely boy and thank you Ian as without the web site we would never have found him.

Thankyou Joan for giving us this lovely update AND for putting so much work in with him, it does take time for a rescue dog to settle in their new home, and if you put in the work you get the rewards,so many people at the moment are wanting the dogs to settle within 24 hrs,and if they dont wanting to return them, so please please see it can be done give them time and this is the result..

Thanks Joan once again, he is a credit to you and your hard work.

Wow, George could be Molly's sister. She is also huge, just short of 43kg and all muscle now. I know John Halsted, the Drakeshead breeder, and I too have been told she is a Drakeshead dog. She is a typical gun lab, very biddable and always trying to please. She is brilliant at putting Grouse up on the moors and would have made a teffific working dog. The only doubt I would have is that I think she would shy at a gun. My vet after seeing her for the first time and telling me I needed to get some weight on her, told me that he had seen dogs as large as that but, never a bitch. She is the largest girlie he has ever seen. Grat photo. :1963:

My sister's boy, Bracken, also has Drakeshead breeding and he is very tall and rangy and only now, at 2.5 years, is he starting to look less puppyish, ie putting on bulk. He has been a very calm lad, with no lab brashness in his youth, and is excellent with my very frail mother of 80. I met his mum and she was similar to Bonnie, small and light. Bonnie also has Drakeshead in her but is at least 6 inches lower at the wither than Bracken, also very biddable and bred to work. I believe her sire is used on the local estate...he is chocolate and her mum was black.

That's really interesting, the vet said he thought George would go up to about 42 kg as he got older. So many people have said he can't possibly be a true lab as he's so big as round here even the working labs are bred smaller, then some others who also work their labs have said about the big dogs being used on the grouse moors.

When I first went to Dog Training he was 11 months old and huge and when I asked to go in the puppy class they thought he was a Great Dane pup :1967:

George is also very biddable and learns very quickly, the only thing is he must have been very harshly treated before we got him as he is absolutely terrified when he has chewed his bed and we go into the utility room. That's not nice to see and you certainly couldn't tell him off as he is a quivering wreck. The thing is he never touches anything he shouldn't in the day time even if he's not in the same room as us.

Joan - he's gorgeous! And if he's got Drakeshead in him he could be related to my three - all their fathers are Drakeshead. It's funny too because Jasper is a big lad yet his litter sister is about 6 or 8 inches shorter than him at the withers - every thinks she is still a pup (my vet friend Helen also had the cheek to say there was jack russell in her somewhere because her legs are short!). Dylan is a big lad too. Also, my neighbour has 2 10 month old pups whose sire is a Drakeshead and they are so tall and gangly - they will be big when the fill out. But whatever George is - he is a real stunner and you should be proud of him . Julie
