:hello2: We're back!

Thanks for all your comments and advice for us and Charlie - Jan, I think my hubby might just go for the tin foil/bubble wrap idea - we have both so can see how it goes - will let you know the results!!! :2063:

Well, we're on Day 5 with Charlie - and are happy to say that he is settling in well - getting used to the fact that we don't like it when he jumps or nips. He still thinks things like getting a new collar fitted and getting his paws dried after a walk is a game - tries to grab the towel so you can't dry him and will turn his head so you can't adjust the collar.... :2019:

However, he is spending more time on the bed that we bought him - it's a morning and evening time place to sleep now! :thumbright:

I took him to Pets at Home on Tuesday afternoon..... on reflection, I maybe should have left him in the car. He was ok, he loved meeting all the new people and LOVED all the smells! :thumbright: He dragged me round a bit, but it was only because his nose seemed to take over and he wanted to sniff EVERYTHING!!!! I bought him a new ball, which I played with in the garden when we got home, but he got too excited and ending up having what we call a 'mad half hour' - which actually only lasted 2 mins, but involved him running round and round the garden in an excited trance. :2008: I called out his name and it seemed to snap him out of it. He did it on Wednesday again, this time it lasted longer and his name being called out didn't stop him. So I have had to stop playing with him in the back garden until he has calmed down more in general. :(

Yesterday, though, was much better - we were out in the car, as I had to visit some supermarkets for my work. I take him for a 20 min walk before he gets in the car, then he gets into the car and sits down straight away. When I start the engine he lies down and then falls asleep after 5 mins of driving – it’s like having a baby in the back of the car! I left him in the car for 25 mins at the first shop, he was calm when I left the car (he watched me like a hawk) and when I returned, I just got into the car and started driving to the next shop – he just plopped back down on the back seat again.
After 90 mins in the car, I gave him a walk and we went home – he was so sleepy! :1968:

Here are some pictures from the last couple of days:

Do you leave a window open or the sun roof when you leave him in the car? Just asking hope you don't mind.

Hi Kath,

Not a problem to ask - I wind down both rear windows (to about two or three finger-widths down), as my car doesn't have a sun roof. I also try and park in the quietest, most shadiest part of the car park, if the sun is out. :1963:

I am considering getting a harness, as I'm not 100% happy about him being on the back seat; I drive carefully when he's in the car but have in the back of my mind if the worst happens and I crash he could get injured, I could get injured, we'd both get injured etc. I have a feeling that it would take a lot of patience and getting used to a harness, he'd try to bite if or wriggle out of it - does anyone else out there use one? :dontknow:

Hi Loops lovely pics of Charlie. I use a harness all the time with Millie, she pulls so much on the lead when it's attached to her collar it is not a pleasure taking her out for a walk as her nose is always on the ground sniffing everything :(. She is a different dog on a harness a sheer pleasure, the pulling stops completely :dontknow: dunno why! I have used it in the car too she doesn't mind at all. Hope this helps :thumbright:

Hi Ann,

How is Millie getting on with the nipping? Charlie (dare I say it) seems to be settling down, now only 1 or 2 instances a day of getting so excited he wants to nip! :thumbright:

Charlie did pull on the lead and sometimes still does when he's excited, but we just use the Cesar Milan techniques and have patience and just keep pulling him back to us and by our side. When we're out, we allow him a sniff and a pee in the first 5 mins, then we do 15 mins of walking where he's not allowed to stop for sniffs. It seems to focus his mind and he enjoys the walking. Then we give him another 5 mins to sniff and whatever else, then another 15 mins of walking - we set distance targets to walk him to before we let him sniff. Then we hope he learns that we walk for exercise, not just so that he can have a sniff!

The harness is purely for the car, so that he's not moving/slipping about in the car when it's in motion. I haven't tried putting him in the boot with a dog guard, which is another option if the harness doesn't work. I have a Mondeo hatchback, so it's not cramped and he can still see out. :dontknow:

not seeming to be funny, but does he ever get to have a free run. may be that would help to stop him getting so excited.

Hi Louise I would say Charlie has settled in extremely well, he's gorgeous :love5: . I've had labs for over 25 years and (in my humble opinion and I know I'm no expert) what you've described above is just normal lab behaviour. My last lab, Khan, would still have his "mad half hour" at 11 years old and I loved it, you don't want him old before his time. George is now 22 months and we actively encourage him to have his mad half hours in the garden or in a safe field, it uses up even more energy and he calms down immediately if we say "enough",

George would definitely have a mad half hour with any new toy we buy him, or with any strange thing he finds on his walks. These have included an animal's skull, a deer's ear :2008: and a huge brussel sprout stalk but I know I can stop it if I want to - he's just having fun and to me that is part and parcel of owning a lab.

It's hard to believe that Charlie has been with us for over a week now - it's as if he's always been here! :thumbright: However, it was a very long week, getting used to a new routine (both us and Charlie) and a new way of thinking about all sorts of things!!!

However, we're now convinced that he's settling in very well. My mum says a dog that snores is a happy dog; in that case Charlie must be very happy as he snores most of the time he's asleep!!! :1966:

Walking on the lead is going very well; his mad half hours haven't stopped, but I nw just let him run it out, it burns energy!!! We haven't let hjim off the lead whilst out and about yet - we want to be completely happy with him on the lead before we move to working with him off it, but I don't think it'll be long until we're letting him off to have an adventure in the local woods! :1961:

His nipping and jumping up haven't completely stopped, but they have lessened, especially the jumping up. He has met a few of our friends who have visited the house in the last week, our neighbours, plus Scott's parents came to visit on Sunday and we're going over to theirs this weekend to let Charlie see their house. Mostly everyone who meets him says "Oh my word, he's so big!" - it's getting funny. He is big, but he's our big bear and we wouldn't change him for the world :love5: :love5: :love5:

On Sunday morning, we had our first walk in the rain - it didn't put him off, but he did need a bit of encouragement to get going! :1962:

Thanks to the suggestion earlier, he has stopped going on the sofa at night - tin foil on the sofa did the trick! We tried bubble wrap first, but it didn't stop him getting up and moving it out of his way - I think he was having fun popping the bubbles with his big bear paws!!!

He makes us laugh every single day, with his little clumsy ways and some of the looks he gives us! He continues to love to sunbathe and is brilliant in the car. So.... we're extremely happy!!!

So pleased it's going well, you did make me smile as the comments you get about Charlie being big are just like we get with George, lots of people ask if he's got Great Dane in him :1966: . George is also very clumsy, in fact, he's so nosey he doesn't look where he's going at all and he makes us laugh every single day with his funny antics.

Sounds like you've got the perfect partnership to me, looking forward to hearing about all your adventures together.

Great update Loops we're down to just one or two nips a day/tugging on clothes, so hopefully moving in the right direction :thumbright: .

Glad he's settling in doesn't that 1st week seem a long one? We felt the same with Millie, had her 8 weeks on Thursday. She also likes to sunbathe preferably outside but I can't leave her out yet as my gates haven't arrived. The driveway was replaced last week, so we're getting there :thumbright:

Hello everyone :hello2: :hello2: :hello2:

Well, it's been 3 weeks since we took Charlie home from MKF and we think he's really settling in now!! :thumbright: :thumbright: :thumbright:

Yesterday, both Scott & I were off for the bank holiday, so we decided to take a run with him in the car to take him somewhere we could give hime a good walk. We did plan for Berwick-Upon-Tweed, but my friend who we were going to see phoned in the morning to say that her Jack Russel bitch Mabel was in season, so it probably wasn't a good idea to bring Charlie down to meet her!! :2008: :2008:

So, we headed north - to Callander, a lovely little town in the Trossachs, not too far from Loch Lomond, in the middle of the beatuiful Scottish countryside. here's a little pictoral summary of our trip....

It was 1pm when we arrived in Callander and finally found a parking space - as many of you know - sunshine and bank holidays mean every picturesque country town becomes manic!!! :2026:

So, we parked out of the town centre and walked down to it - so the first stop was a cafe with outdoor seating!! :hello1: :hello1: :hello1:
As you can see, we made sure we had the magic "Bru" to give us lots of energy for the walk ahead! Charlie just had to settle for water... :1968:
Image

Then we wandered around the back of the houses off the main street and found a path into some woods... As Charlie was having a good sniff, Scott & I looked around at the path that we had found and a lovely local lady told us that we were on a loop path through the woods, which would take us to the other end of town and was a lovely walk and ideal for dogs!! So off we went!!!
Image
Image

It was such a lovely day and the woods were nice and cool.... ideal for walking the boy - and so scenic:
Image
Image

After we came out of the woods, we joined a cycle path that followed the old railway route... we walked for around a nother couple of miles, then saw a pub in the distance so we crossed the river Teith:
Image

and headed for it! Scott really found his stride when he found the road to the pub!
Image

A drink of the home-brewed real ale for Scott in the dog-friendly beer garden (one guy came out the pub with a biscuit for Charlie!!)
Image

After that, we headed back to the town and had a wander around the shops before heading to the car.... Charlie just managed to jump into the car (we're now putting him in the boot) and he just flumped down and slept the whole way home! :1961: :1961:

We had such a good day that Scott and I have decided to return to Callander in a few weeks for a weekend away for our 3rd wedding anniversary - of course we're taking Charlie!!! We can't wait!

:love6:

Bye for now! Louise, Scott & Charlie. xxx
